Let’s Talk Policy – Fair Taxation

Let’s talk policy! 📣

Starting with income taxes.

When I was in university, I never stopped working. I remember working 2 part time jobs at once to keep up. It was unhealthy but I was in survival mode to keep up with the cost of living and ensure I could get an education. I looked forward to tax season because I’d still get a decent return to put it toward groceries, rent, text books & more. I share this because I know what struggling is like.

Now? I’m paying off student loans. I’ve got a mortgage. Life’s more expensive in every direction. And I’m not alone. I know so many of you are carrying your own version of this load: rent, childcare, credit card debt, rising food costs… it’s different for everyone, but the feeling is the same.
YET we start getting taxed on income after just $15,705. That means people working full-time jobs, sometimes multiple jobs, are still taxed while trying to afford life.

The Green Party is proposing Fair Taxation.

Our plan is to raise the basic personal amount (the income you can earn before paying federal tax) from $15,705 to $40,000.

In other words, we will eliminate federal income tax for your income under $40,000. These policies will create the biggest change to taxation in generations!

What this also means is if you earn around $40,000, you keep up to $6,000 more a year (sounds nice!!)

At $52,000, you’d save ~ $3,600

Even at $62,000, the same savings apply!

Every tax situation is different but what applies here is that your money can stay in your community & not in federal coffers or corporate tax breaks. You spend it at local shops, pay off debt & breathe easier.

Once you can get by, then it is easier to start saving. I know over half of Canadians are living paycheck to paycheck so we need policy to reflect Canadians FIRST and not those who have the privilege to save. We can all get there but we need to get there together.

This isn’t just about me, it’s about all of us. Whatever your situation, we all deserve a tax system that meets people where they’re at & not one that punishes those just trying to get by.

Ask all candidates what they think is fair when it comes to our income taxes. As your Green MP I am advocating for change!
